  YEMEN #1

 

Day 1: Arrive Sana'a

Arrive Sana'a airport. Transfer to Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 2: Seyun & Wadi Hadhramout

Morning flight to Seyun and long famous and mysterious Wadi Hadhramout. Visit the Sultans Palace of Seyun, the museum and the local souq. See the mudbrick skyscrapers of Shibam and Tareem, a famous religious center. Overnight Seyun.

 

Day 3: Mukalla

Morning drive to Al Hajarayn, the remarkable stone village atop a rocky slope of Wadi Hajarayn. Continue to Mukalla at the coast of the Arabian Sea. Overnight Al Mukalla.

 

Day 4: Mukalla

Tour Chail Ba Wazir, a rest station along the ancient caravan route and the connection point between the Wadi and the coast of Hadhramout. Drive to Bir Ali, a beautiful volcanic beach and the ancient port of Qana. Overnight Al Mukalla.

 

Day 5: The Old City of Sana'a

Return flight to SanaŒa. Tour the Old City built in 200 BC, as a fortress for the Kingdom of Sheba. Visit the labyrinthine Souq Al-Milh and the National Museum. Overnight Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 6: Sana'a

Excursion to Manakha and Al-Hajjarah, fortified medieval villages, and Al-Hoteib, the famous pilgrimage center for Ismaili Muslims. Overnight Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 7: Towns & Villages near Hamdan

Excursion to Habbabah, Kawkaban and trek down to Shiban. Continue to Sana'a via Thulla (9000 ft altitude). Overnight Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 8: Depart Sana'a

Day 1: Arrive Sana'a

Arrive Sana'a airport. Transfer to Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 2: The Old City of Sana'a

Morning visit of Sana'a, the city built in 200 BC as a fortress for the Kingdom of Sheba. Visit Souk Al-Milh and the National Museum. Drive to Wadi-Dahar to visit The Rock Palace, the summer residence of Iman Yahya, built in the 1930's. Overnight Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 3: The Empire of the Queen of Sheba

Drive to Marib, seat of the Empire of the Queen of Sheba. Visit the old and new Dams, the throne of Bilquis, the Sun Temple and the ancient city of Marib. Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 4: Taiz/Jiblla/Ibb

Depart for Taiz, capital of the Rassoulies, crossing Dhamar, Jiblia and Ibb. The road traverses the central plateau of Yemen, rich in culture and exotic plants. En route visit to Jiblia, capital of the Sulayhides and the famous Queen Arwa in the 11th century. Overnight Taiz.

 

Day 5: Down to the Red Sea

Depart for Hodeidah via Wadi Dhabab and its traditional market, Al Khokha beach, Zabid, the old capital of Islamic culture, and Bail Al Fagih, the most animated souk in Tihama. Overnight Hodeidah.

 

Day 6: Back to the Highlands

After visiting the fish market and the old port of Hodeidah, depart for Sana'a. En route tour Manaka and Al-Hajarah, fortified medievel villages. Overnight Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 7: Towns & Villages near Hamdan

Day 3: Crossing Ramlat-Al Sabatain Desert/Seyun

4X4 excursion to Seyun, through the Ramlat Al-Sabatain Desert. En route visit Shabwa, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Hadhramout. Overnight Seyun.

 

Day 4: Tarim/Ainat/Shibam/Seyun

Morning tour of famous Wadi Hadhramout, center of the highly profitable Frankincense trade. Visit the Sultans Palace of Seyun, the museum and the local souq. See the fabulous mudbrick skyscrapers of Shibam and Tareem, a famous religious center. Overnight Seyun.

 

Day 5: Wadi Al Hajarrein/Wadi Do'an/Al-Mukalla

Depart for Wadi Do'an. En route visit Al Hajarayn, the remarkable stone village atop a rocky slope. Continue to Al-Mukalla, a prosperous sea port and fishing center on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Overnight Al- Mukalla.

 

Day 6: Al Mukalla/Sana'a

Morning flight to Sana'a. Tour the Old City of Sana'a, built in 200 BC as a fortress for the Kingdom of Sheba, and designated by UNESCO in 1984 as a National Heritage site. Visit Souk Al-Milh, Bab al-Yaman and the National Museum. Overnight Taj Sheba Hotel.

 

Day 7: Jiblla/Ibb/Taiz

Depart for Taiz, capital of the Rassoulies, crossing Dhamar, Jiblia and Ibb. The road traverses the central palteau of Yemen, rich in culture and exotic plants. En route there is a short visit to Jiblia, capital of the Sulayhides and the famous Queen Arwa in the XI century. Overnight Taiz.

 

Day 8: Down to the Red Sea

Depart for Hodeidah. En route visit Wadi Dhabab and its traditional market, Al Khokha beach, Zabid, the old capital of the Islamic culture and Bail Al-Fagih, the most animated Souk in Tihama. Arrive in Hodeidah, the old port of Arabia Felix. Overnight Hodeidah.

 

Day 9: Back to the Highlands
